This term that got coined during 1970s, form one of the top 5 film industries in the world. "Bollywood" is used to refer Indian (Hindi) cinema originating in Mumbai, formerly Bombay.

The movies produced are primarily musicals, and are expected to have catchy song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. A film's success often depends on the quality of such musical numbers. A film's music and song and dance portions are usually produced first and these are often released before the film itself, increasing its audience.

Several classic movies from the historical epic, notably Mughal-e-Azam (1960) to action-adventure Sholay (1975), Bollywood movies caters to every kind of genre.

Actors and actresses, rather than plots, were often the driving force behind the films. This interest continued with male actors such as Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dev Anand in the 1950s and ’60s, Rajesh Khanna in the ’70s, Amitabh Bachchan in the ’80s, Shah Rukh Khan in the ’90s while Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar in current times. Popular female icons included Madhubala in the 1950s, Mumtaz in the ’60s, Zeenat Aman in the ’70s, Hema Malini in the ’80s, Madhuri Dixit and Kajol in the ’90s while Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt ruling the screen now.

Gradually Bollywood was also able to win the hearts of international audiences in China, Hong Kong, Japan as well as in other countries. The formulaic story lines, expertly and super fictitious choreographed fight scenes, spectacular song-and-dance routines, emotion-charged melodrama, and larger-than-life heroes never fails to amaze us.
