An abundant use of aromatic and ingredients like peanuts, coconut, coriander leaves, onion, sesame seeds, lemon and chilies, makes Maharashtrian snacks truly flavorful . They include mild as well as spicy dishes. Let’s have a look on most popular ones!!


Pohe

Pohe is made out of flattened rice and is a favorite among every Maharashtrian. It can be prepared in numerous ways. The most common variant is Kanda poha which is made with onions. One of the variants include Dadpe pohe which is raw poha prepared with fresh, shredded coconut, green chilies and lime juice. No matter which way you choose to make it, poha will leave you craving for more!

Vada pav

This iconic street food is said to be an Indian version of burger having key ingredients like spicy mashed potatoes that are deep-fried in chickpea batter, and pav, or white bread rolls. It is sold throughout Mumbai, both on street stands and in restaurants, ideally accompanied by red chutney and salted fried chillies.


Alu wadi

It is a savory vegetarian dish from Malvani cuisine. Basic ingredients are the same throughout the entire region—colocasia leaves stuffed (or chopped up) with a mixture of gram flour, rice flour, tamarind, jaggery, and various spices, and later steamed and fried.


Misal Pav

Misal Pav is a specialty dish and one of the spicy dishes of Maharashtra. Its name literally means a mixture of everything, so the ingredients may vary. However, ingredients in most common missal pav is moth bean or pea curry, gravy, spiced boiled potatoes and garnishing such as onions, coriander, and tomatoes.


Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana means tapioca starch. Khichdi means mixture. This unique dish is a popular breakfast item in Maharashtra cuisine and is one of the few food products which is consumed during the period of holy-fasting. The sago when prepared in a savory mix turns out to be a delicious dish indeed.


Thaalipith

Thalipith is a traditional dish of Maharashtra. It is made up of multi-grain flour and vegetables and is served with Ghee and Yogurt. It is a nutritious dish that contains vegetables.


Sheera

Sheera or suji halwa is a delicious Indian pudding made with semolina, milk, sugar, ghee, nuts & cardamoms. Sometimes, seasonal sheera is also made by adding fruits like banana, mango and cherries.
